For me, self-respect has become a vital issue because I lost it in my younger days. I lost it due to some wrong moves. The worst was thinking that a career as a college teacher would be a good fit for me. It didn’t work out.

Now I am interested in reclaiming my self-respect. I find many candidates for what should be improved or changed in a literature review. Some of these include managing your emotions, standing up for yourself, doing the right thing, finding someone to look up to, creating accountability, and so forth.

Need for Recognition Underlies Self-Respect

The only common denominator here is these strategies are all directed toward earning more positive recognition from others.

But there is no agreement about the number one way to elevate self-respect. Is there a single best strategy?

You may have undergone a loss that led to less self-approval; it can be devastating and lead to severe losses.

Commentators mention shame and regret as losses. Or it can be the occasion for renewal and redemption.
